How are emergency situations handled in elevator systems?Every lift supplied in South Africa should be supplied with a safety system. These safety systems activate when there is a critical issue or a safety issue takes place. The service provider should then be called to assist and under no circumstance should an unqualified person attempt to work on the lift.

What is the probability of the elevator falling?The chances of a lift falling are very low, about 2%. And then only in extreme cases where lift, hoists, dumb waiters have been installed without safety gear or safety circuits.

Is it expensive to install a liftLike with the car you buy, every manufacturer has their product. If one does not have money for a Mercedes Benz and can only afford a Fiat, there will be a difference in cost. However, a Fiat cannot offer what a Mercedes Benz can, not in size or quality. Although both can take you where you need to be, the latter does not last as long as the Mercedes Benz.

Are there financing options available for installation?There are finance companies that will finance the unit, however they will require all Compliance certificates and maintenance contracts to be in place before the end of the project.

What steps should one follow when a lift is required or if one wants to install a lift in a building?A lift supplier should be contacted, they will require a plan as to where the lift is required and would it be possible to fit it there. The lift supplier needs to go to site to measure and verify if this is possible to do, and if the position will be suitable for the lift. Site measurements need to be done, floor to floor heights, pit and headroom heights need to be verified. Once these are done, drawings can be supplied for the shaft that will be required, including, width, depth, pit and headroom heights. A quotation for the lift will be supplied along with the drawings. Once all is approved, the lift can be ordered and installed as well as inspected by a registered lift inspector.

What documentation is required if there is an existing unit in a building or if a new lift, escalator, hoist, conveyor or dumbwaiter needs to be fitted?Every unit needs to be registered with the Department of Labour and a certificate number given. This is an Annexure 1 Document. Once installed an Annexure a document must be issued and thereafter an Annexure B document.

What is the difference between the indoor and outdoor escalatorAn indoor escalator does not all the waterproofing that an outdoor escalator will have. An Outdoor escalator will have water proof equipment, starting at the steps working its way to the safety gear and electrical switches. All these will have a certain IP rating for safety purposes and to prevent rust and corrosion.

How do I choose the right conveyor belt for my application?Conveyors are based on the size or amount of stock that must be moved. Some conveyors require narrow belts while when moving bulky stock, a much wider belt is required, usually around 900mm, while smaller items being moved only requires a 600mm belt.

How much does it cost to install a conveyor belt?This depends on the application. One should way up the cost of labour and the cost of the unit before deciding to put in a conveyor belt. Although not expensive, they could be costly if not treated well.

Do elevators, escalators, hoists, conveyors and dumbwaiters need to be registered with the Department of Labour?The regulation does state that these units need to be registered with the department of labour.

If I want to put a lift or dumbwaiter into my house, does it need to be registered with the Department of Labour?Yes, It needs to be registered with the Department of Labour

Do Stair Lifts and Disabled lifts (platform Lifts) need to be registered with the Department of Labour?Yes, these lifts need to be registered with the Department of Labour and serviced accordingly.

How Often must an Annexure B document be issued?These need to be issued as soon as the unit is installed as it is a comprehensive report of the Annexure A. thereafter it needs to be issued every two years, or after every upgrade or controller change

If the unit is upgraded, does it need to be re-registered with the Department of Labour?No, when a unit is upgraded it is not a requirement to re-register with the Department of Labour.

If a lift has been out of service for many years and put back into service, does it need to be re-registered with the Department of Labour?The Department of Labour should be informed that the unit will be put back into service, however, the unit should be inspected carefully for safety and compliance. Then a new Annexure B certificate must be issued and any items on these need to be completed.

What items are normally found on an Annexure B certificate?These will usually builders (client) items or Supplier items.

Do elevators, escalators, hoist, conveyors, dumbwaiters require regular maintenance? -The answer to all these are yes. The Department of Labour (DOL) has placed a major priority on safety. Every person that uses a lift, hoist, escalator, dumbwaiter or conveyor someway or another needs to be safe when using of these. Therefore there are regulations in place that require these to be serviced accordingly, Lifts, Hoists, Escalators and Dumbwaiters to be done Monthly, While Conveyors need to be done quarterly

Is it true that lifts, stairlifts and platform lifts only need to be serviced based on the manufacturers recommendations?This is true, and every unit supplied to South Africa needs to comply with SANS 1545 regulations and EN81 requirements.

Do these Annexure B items prevent a unit from going into service?Only if they are safety items. On older units the units can run but here are 60 days to complete the items otherwise the unit must be switched off. A new installation may not have any items.
