Machine Room-less Elevator
The machine-room-less elevator exemplifies the crucial concepts of environmental protection, energy efficiency, and space optimization, showcasing a commitment to sustainability. This advanced elevator design requires only a single independent shaft, eliminating the need for a separate machine room. Compared to conventional elevators with the same load capacity, it achieves a 40% reduction in energy consumption and a 10% saving in construction space. This innovation not only enhances design flexibility but also highlights a dedication to green technology.

Elevate Connection has had some queries regarding the advantages of traction and Hydraulic units, we will gladly assist with some of these below
The disadvantages of hydraulic elevators:
-
The pumping station is noisy
-
High maintenance costs
-
Not eoo-friendly and easy to leak oil
-
High requirements for installation and adjusting
-
In colder temperatures oil takes to long to heat up and levelling becomes an issue
-
Over time, even with monthly services, the floor levels tend to become an issue as the seals leak
The traction machine elevator:
-
Guide rails on both sides of the elevator car is quiet and stable with mature structure and high security.
-
Newer units are energy conservation and eco-friendly.
-
The unit is quieter with sheaves below the car
-
The 2:1 roping increases traction of the elevator
-
The Position Reference System (PRS) enables the elevator levelling to be more accurate
-
Weather conditions do not affect the elevator ride
-
The travelling speed of the car is determined by the height of the travel and number of floors
-
Cantilever elevators are available when one requires panoramic elevators
-
With a cantilever traction machine elevator with guide rails on the side of the elevator car is stable and comfortable with flexible installation and layout
-
Only one load-bearing wall is needed with high utilization rate of shafts for a Cantilever unit
The disadvantages of traction machine elevator with cantilever or guide rails on both sides of the elevator car:
-
Occupy more construction area depending on the size of the car required
-
Low utilization of shafts
-
Often complicated with higher installation requirements
-
The disadvantages of traction machine elevator with guide rails on the side of the elevator car:
-
One-sided force, easy to wear and tear
-
High installation requirements
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How are emergency situations handled in elevator systems?Every lift supplied in South Africa should be supplied with a safety system. These safety systems activate when there is a critical issue or a safety issue takes place. The service provider should then be called to assist and under no circumstance should an unqualified person attempt to work on the lift.
-
What is the probability of the elevator falling? The chances of a lift falling are very low, about 2%. And then only in extreme cases where lift, hoists, dumb waiters have been installed without safety gear or safety circuits.
-
How much does it cost to install an elevator?Prices will vary depending on the size, type and number of stops per lift. Location also plays a part in the costing.
-
Is it expensive to install a liftLike with the car you buy, every manufacturer has their product. If one does not have money for a Mercedes Benz and can only afford a Fiat, there will be a difference in cost. However, a Fiat cannot offer what a Mercedes Benz can, not in size or quality. Although both can take you where you need to be, the latter does not last as long as the Mercedes Benz.
-
Are there financing options available for installation? There are finance companies that will finance the unit, however they will require all Compliance certificates and maintenance contracts to be in place before the end of the project.
-
What steps should one follow when a lift is required or if one wants to install a lift in a building?A lift supplier should be contacted, they will require a plan as to where the lift is required and would it be possible to fit it there. The lift supplier needs to go to site to measure and verify if this is possible to do, and if the position will be suitable for the lift. Site measurements need to be done, floor to floor heights, pit and headroom heights need to be verified. Once these are done, drawings can be supplied for the shaft that will be required, including, width, depth, pit and headroom heights. A quotation for the lift will be supplied along with the drawings. Once all is approved, the lift can be ordered and installed as well as inspected by a registered lift inspector.
-
What documentation is required if there is an existing unit in a building or if a new lift, escalator, hoist, conveyor or dumbwaiter needs to be fitted?Every unit needs to be registered with the Department of Labour and a certificate number given. This is an Annexure 1 Document. Once installed an Annexure a document must be issued and thereafter an Annexure B document.
-
What is the difference between the indoor and outdoor escalatorAn indoor escalator does not all the waterproofing that an outdoor escalator will have. An Outdoor escalator will have water proof equipment, starting at the steps working its way to the safety gear and electrical switches. All these will have a certain IP rating for safety purposes and to prevent rust and corrosion.
-
How much does it cost to install an escalator?Prices will vary depending on the size, type and height. Location also plays a part in the costing.
-
How do I choose the right conveyor belt for my application?Conveyors are based on the size or amount of stock that must be moved. Some conveyors require narrow belts while when moving bulky stock, a much wider belt is required, usually around 900mm, while smaller items being moved only requires a 600mm belt.
-
How much does it cost to install a conveyor belt? This depends on the application. One should way up the cost of labour and the cost of the unit before deciding to put in a conveyor belt. Although not expensive, they could be costly if not treated well.
-
Do elevators, escalators, hoists, conveyors and dumbwaiters need to be registered with the Department of Labour? The regulation does state that these units need to be registered with the department of labour.
-
If I want to put a lift or dumbwaiter into my house, does it need to be registered with the Department of Labour?Yes, It needs to be registered with the Department of Labour
-
Do Stair Lifts and Disabled lifts (platform Lifts) need to be registered with the Department of Labour?Yes, these lifts need to be registered with the Department of Labour and serviced accordingly.
-
How Often must an Annexure B document be issued? These need to be issued as soon as the unit is installed as it is a comprehensive report of the Annexure A. thereafter it needs to be issued every two years, or after every upgrade or controller change
-
If the unit is upgraded, does it need to be re-registered with the Department of Labour? No, when a unit is upgraded it is not a requirement to re-register with the Department of Labour.
-
If a lift has been out of service for many years and put back into service, does it need to be re-registered with the Department of Labour? The Department of Labour should be informed that the unit will be put back into service, however, the unit should be inspected carefully for safety and compliance. Then a new Annexure B certificate must be issued and any items on these need to be completed.
-
What items are normally found on an Annexure B certificate? These will usually builders (client) items or Supplier items.
-
Must every lift, hoist, escalator, dumbwaiter or conveyor have a service provider? The regulation states that every unit must be serviced by a registered service provider with qualified artisans.
-
If there is no service provider appointed yet for a new installation, can an Annexure B be issued? Most suppliers will give a 12 month free service on the unit they supplied, however, after the 12 month free service, including older units, No unit may be put into service with out a maintenance contract in place with a service provider.
-
Do elevators, escalators, hoist, conveyors, dumbwaiters require regular maintenance? -The answer to all these are yes. The Department of Labour (DOL) has placed a major priority on safety. Every person that uses a lift, hoist, escalator, dumbwaiter or conveyor someway or another needs to be safe when using of these. Therefore there are regulations in place that require these to be serviced accordingly, Lifts, Hoists, Escalators and Dumbwaiters to be done Monthly, While Conveyors need to be done quarterly
-
Is it true that lifts, stairlifts and platform lifts only need to be serviced based on the manufacturers recommendations? This is true, and every unit supplied to South Africa needs to comply with SANS 1545 regulations and EN81 requirements.
-
Do these Annexure B items prevent a unit from going into service?Only if they are safety items. On older units the units can run but here are 60 days to complete the items otherwise the unit must be switched off. A new installation may not have any items.
-
Must every lift, hoist, escalator, dumbwaiter or conveyor have a service provider? The regulation states that every unit must be serviced by a registered service provider with qualified artisans.
